GPS efforts to reduce recidivism working, says Attorney General

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, says the reduction in recidivism rates, signalled a positive trend in the rehabilitation of offenders within the country’s correctional system.

During his remarks at the launching of the First Responders Course in mental, neurological and substance abuse disorder on Thursday at the University of Guyana, the Attorney General described the achievement as evidence that that the prison service approach to rehabilitation of prisoners is working.

“That is a remarkable achievement, it means that the prison service is doing something right because the rate in which we have repetition has reduced...it means that the prison service is churning out better people that you are taking, so the prison service therefore is doing something that is having a positive impact upon the prisoners”, the AG noted.

The rate at which convicted criminals have recommitted an offence – recidivism − in Guyana stands at 18 percent in 2023, according to Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot.

Elliot said on Thursday that the service’s concerted efforts in providing technical and vocational skills training, alongside behavioral modification and social services programmes, have contributed significantly to this achievement.

Guyana’s rate of reimprisoned law offenders is hailed as remarkable in comparison to Australia’s average of 45% and the United States of America’s average of 43%, as reported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
